Trade talks between Washington and Ottawa broke down on Friday, plunging the two countries into an open tariff dispute. Donald Trump reacted on social media, while Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced it as an attack.

Donald Trump chose to respond to the collapse of trade negotiations with Canada via a social media post. "Canada wants the benefits of being a state, without being one!" the US president wrote in his first public comments since the talks broke down, Friday in Washington.

For his part, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney did not mince words: "We have been attacked," he declared, as new U.S. tariffs came into effect on a wide range of Canadian products, from hockey sticks to medical tongue depressors.

The breakdown in talks leaves the two countries at an impasse, the contours of which remain unclear. The question now facing Ottawa is whether any negotiation with the Trump administration is truly possible, or whether the balance of power has definitively superseded trade diplomacy.
