Following discussions on the sidelines of the G7 summit, the American president Donald Trump called on Russia to conclude a peace agreement with Ukraine, while remaining vague on the possibility of increasing economic pressure against Moscow.
According to several diplomats present at the talks, the American leader made no firm commitment regarding a tightening of sanctions against Russia, despite repeated requests from his Western counterparts.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy participated in discussions with G7 leaders, seeking increased support for Kyiv. European officials also stressed the need to bolster aid to Ukraine, believing the country now has greater strategic leverage on the ground.
However, according to several diplomatic sources, Donald Trump remained cautious and did not clarify his position on possible new sanctions or on an intensification of economic pressure against Moscow.
Meanwhile, G7 discussions also focused on the situation in the Middle East, particularly the question of a possible agreement concerning Iran. Several European countries warned against any compromise deemed too weak, believing it could undermine regional stability.
In this context, the differences between the United States and some European partners have once again emerged, both on the strategy to adopt in the face of the war in Ukraine and on the major international security issues addressed at the G7 Summit 2026.
