Le président américain Donald Trump said on Saturday that a memorandum of understanding "broadly negotiated" with Iran was on the verge of being finalized, potentially paving the way for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime passage paralyzed since the beginning of the conflict between Washington, Israel and Tehran.
In a message posted on Truth Social, Trump stated that "the final aspects and details of the agreement are currently being discussed and will be announced soon." However, the US president did not provide any details on the exact content of the text currently being negotiated.
According to Trump, the agreement would allow the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil and gas trade. The partial closure of the strait since the start of the war in February has severely disrupted international energy markets and exacerbated global economic tensions.
However, Iranian authorities quickly disputed this version. The Iranian news agency Fars asserted that the future agreement would instead stipulate that Iran would retain control of the Strait, calling Trump's statements "incompatible with reality."
Pakistan is currently playing a key mediating role in the negotiations between the United States and Iran. Sources close to the discussions describe "encouraging" progress, although several significant disagreements remain between the two sides.
According to the New York Times, the agreement also includes an "apparent commitment" from Iran to abandon its highly enriched uranium program, a subject of central Western concern for years. However, Tehran has not officially confirmed this sensitive point.
Despite the announced diplomatic progress, persistent disagreements over control of the Strait of Hormuz and the Iranian nuclear program show that negotiations remain fragile and likely to encounter further obstacles.
