Le président américain Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States would deploy 5,000 additional troops to Poland, amid persistent tensions in Europe related to the war in Ukraine and relations with Russia.
The announcement was made in a message published on the Truth Social network, where Donald Trump explained that this decision was linked in particular to his good relations with the recently elected Polish president, Karol Nawrocki.
"Following the successful election of President Karol Nawrocki, whom I was proud to support, and in view of our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland," the US president wrote.
This decision comes just two days after US Vice President JD Vance indicated that a previous plan to deploy US troops to Poland had been delayed.
Since returning to the White House, Donald Trump has been pushing European NATO member countries to take on a greater share of their own defense responsibilities. His administration is currently conducting a comprehensive review of the American military presence in Europe, with the prospect of possible reductions in certain regions.
Poland, however, has become a major strategic ally of Washington on NATO's eastern flank. The country already hosts several thousand American troops and plays a central role in providing logistical and military support to Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict with Russia.
This new increase in American troops could be seen as a signal of firmness to Moscow, as security tensions remain high in Eastern Europe.
