Le président américain Donald Trump said that his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping was "very pleased" with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the strategic importance of this sea route for major economic powers.
In a message posted on the Truth Social network, Trump claimed that the Chinese leader welcomed the return to normal or imminent traffic flow through this key waterway for global energy trade. "President Xi is very pleased that the Strait of Hormuz is open or rapidly reopening," he wrote.
The American president also mentioned his upcoming meeting with Xi Jinping in China, which he described as potentially "historic". "Our meeting in China will be special... many things will be accomplished," he added, without giving further details on the agenda for the discussions.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world's oil passes, has recently been at the heart of tensions related to the conflict with Iran. Its gradual reopening is seen as a key factor for the stability of international energy markets.
Trump's remarks come amid a context of diplomatic realignment, where major powers seek to secure their energy supplies while maintaining a strategic balance in the region.
The prospect of a summit between the two leaders could thus offer an opportunity for dialogue on major issues, ranging from energy security to trade relations between Washington and Beijing.
