Le président américain Donald Trump stated that Iran had already agreed not to acquire nuclear weapons, while asserting that Washington was continuing its efforts to reach an agreement with Tehran.
In an interview with the New York Post's "Pod Force One" podcast, Trump asserted that Iranian authorities had accepted the principle of abandoning military nuclear ambitions.
"Iran has already agreed not to have nuclear weapons. They can change their minds, but they have accepted this condition," he said.
The US president indicated that his administration was still working to reach an agreement with Tehran. He stated that a diplomatic settlement would be preferable, but that the United States had other options if negotiations failed.
"If it works, it will be great. If it doesn't work, that's not a big deal either. We'll find another way," he said, without specifying the measures under consideration.
Trump also stressed that he wanted to avoid any deployment of American troops in the region, believing that the United States could defend its interests without engaging in new ground operations.
Addressing discussions with Iranian leaders, the US president confirmed he was in contact with several influential officials, including Mojtaba Khamenei. He stated he was open to a direct meeting with him.
"Yes, I would like to meet him. I would like to meet everyone. If things progress positively, we will probably meet someday," Trump said.
Regarding his relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump acknowledged having expressed his displeasure on several occasions, particularly regarding the persistent tensions with Lebanon.
He did, however, insist that their relations remained strong, highlighting the close cooperation between Washington and Jerusalem on regional security issues.
The US president also defended his policy toward Iran, stating that his primary objective was to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. According to him, this issue is directly linked to Israel's security and the strategic balance of the Middle East.
Domestically, Trump presented a positive assessment of the American economy, arguing that lower energy prices were helping to keep inflation relatively low. He also highlighted American military power and the results achieved by his administration in several international affairs, particularly in Venezuela.
