Le président américain Donald Trump President Trump announced on Monday that he had suspended a planned military attack against Iran after receiving a new peace proposal from Tehran to Washington. He now asserts that there is a "very good chance" of reaching an agreement on Iran's nuclear program.
In a message published Monday, Donald Trump indicated that he had ordered the US military not to launch the offensive initially planned against Iran, while asking US forces to remain ready to carry out "a massive attack" if no agreement deemed acceptable was reached with Tehran.
No such military operation had been publicly announced before, and Reuters reports that it was unable to confirm whether concrete preparations had actually begun. A resumption of the strikes would have marked a major new escalation in the conflict triggered by military tensions between Washington, Israel, and Iran in recent months.
According to several reports relayed by Reuters, the Iranian proposal aims in particular to end the war, secure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and allow the United States to partially unfreeze Iranian assets. Pakistan is said to have acted as an intermediary in the discussions, although a Pakistani source described the negotiations as particularly difficult.
Donald Trump also claimed that the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates had asked him to postpone the attack, believing that an agreement acceptable to the United States and the entire Middle East could be reached. However, the US president did not provide any specific details on the terms currently being discussed.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Donald Trump explained that Washington would be satisfied with an agreement preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. "If we can achieve that without massively bombing them, I'll be very happy," he said.
Despite these more conciliatory statements, the ceasefire remains fragile in the region after several weeks of US and Israeli airstrikes and drone attacks that have significantly exacerbated tensions in the Middle East. International markets continue to closely monitor developments in the talks, particularly given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz for global oil exports.
