Maritime tensions: Trump calls on Seoul to participate in protecting ships near Iran

Le président américain Donald Trump South Korea stated on Monday that it should join Washington-led efforts to secure maritime navigation in waters near Iran. This initiative comes amid heightened regional tensions.

According to the US president, international cooperation is necessary to protect ship movements in this strategic area, which is regularly marked by risks of incidents and military tensions. However, he did not specify the precise modalities of this potential South Korean participation.

This statement comes as Washington strengthens its diplomatic and military presence in the region, particularly in response to persistent tensions with Iran. The United States is seeking to mobilize its allies to secure maritime routes deemed essential to global trade.

In this context, Donald Trump also indicated that US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth will hold a press conference on Tuesday alongside the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine, in order to clarify the outlines of the ongoing operations.

South Korea, a major US ally in Asia, has not yet officially responded to this proposal. Seoul already maintains sensitive economic and security relations with several Middle Eastern countries, which could make its participation diplomatically challenging.

While tensions around strategic sea lanes remain high, this statement illustrates Washington's willingness to expand the coalition of countries involved in securing trade routes near the Strait of Hormuz and adjacent areas.
