A group of Taiwanese companies has called on Beijing and Taipei not to politicize trade relations amid ongoing tensions between China and Taiwan. This stance comes as economic exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait remain closely linked despite political differences.
The head of one of Taiwan's leading business groups emphasized that trade must remain independent of political rivalries. He argued that economic relations are essential to regional stability and should not be used as a tool in disputes between governments.
This appeal comes shortly after China announced new incentives aimed at attracting Taiwan's restaurant and tourism sectors. Beijing is thus seeking to strengthen economic ties while maintaining its position that Taiwan is part of its territory.
In Taipei, authorities responded by stating that industries should not be "manipulated" for political purposes. The Taiwanese government remains vigilant regarding Chinese initiatives, which it sometimes views as attempts at influence.
Despite these tensions, businesses on both sides of the strait remain heavily interdependent, particularly in key sectors such as technology, trade, and services. This economic interdependence makes calls for de-escalation especially significant.
While relations between Beijing and Taipei remain fragile, economic actors are trying to preserve a space for cooperation, believing that trade stability is a major issue for the region and for their activities.
