Chernobyl: The G7 urged to finance the repair of the Ukrainian nuclear site

The G7 foreign ministers are to discuss a financing plan to repair the protective shield of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, damaged by drone strikes.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot indicated that the necessary work is estimated at around 500 million euros.

This project concerns the containment structure installed above the reactor that was damaged in 1986, which is essential to limit the risks of radioactive leakage.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, recent damage currently prevents this facility from fully fulfilling its safety function.

France believes that the G7 should play a central role in mobilizing funding, in coordination with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The president of the EBRD, Odile Renaud-Basso, is also expected to participate in the discussions to organize this fundraising.

This situation highlights the vulnerability of nuclear infrastructure during periods of conflict, particularly in Ukraine.

It also highlights the potential environmental and health risks in the event of prolonged degradation of the site.

The financing and securing of Chernobyl thus appear as a major issue for the international community.
