Starmer wants a strategic shift for the UK in the face of a "more dangerous" world

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that the war in Iran should mark a turning point for the United Kingdom, calling for a strategic overhaul in the face of a global environment he considers "more volatile and dangerous".

In an opinion piece, Starmer argued that this conflict, which has severely disrupted global energy markets, should serve as a wake-up call for London. He specifically cited soaring fuel prices and the risk of increased inflation as direct consequences of the crisis.

The British Prime Minister has pledged to strengthen the country's economy, defense, and energy security to better withstand international shocks. He believes the goal is no longer to return to pre-crisis equilibrium, but to chart a "new course" adapted to current challenges.

Starmer placed this situation within a series of crises that have marked the country for almost twenty years: the 2008 financial crisis, Brexit, the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

He stressed that how the UK responds to the war in Iran will define its future for an entire generation, insisting on the need to learn lessons from these successive upheavals.

Having come to power in 2024 after a landslide electoral victory, Keir Starmer nevertheless faces significant constraints, including limited public finances, internal tensions and international instability, which complicate the implementation of his reforms.

In this context, the Iranian conflict appears to London as a major test of its ability to adapt to a new, more uncertain world order.
