Clashes erupted in Belgrade between hundreds of students and police following a controversial raid on the University of Belgrade. The incident has reignited tensions between authorities and anti-government movements, which have been running high for over a year.
According to witnesses, clashes briefly broke out between protesters and police in the city center. Law enforcement used batons to disperse the crowd, while hostile slogans such as "dogs" and "traitors" were chanted by the participants.
The mobilization was sparked by a police operation carried out in the university offices, officially as part of an investigation into the death of a 25-year-old student. The young woman reportedly fell from a window of a neighboring building a few days earlier.
Authorities claim the search was aimed at gathering evidence related to the investigation. However, this version is disputed by university officials and protesters, who denounce the intervention as unjustified.
The university rector, Vladan Djokic, accused the police of acting without a valid legal basis, stating that documents and computers had been seized. "You can search university premises, but you cannot search people's consciences," he said.
These events are taking place within a climate of persistent protest in Serbia, where political and social tensions are escalating. Student movements are playing a central role in this mobilization.
The confrontation illustrates a growing unease about the functioning of institutions and respect for public freedoms, particularly in academic circles.
While the authorities defend the legitimacy of the investigation, the protesters denounce an authoritarian drift, suggesting further mobilizations in the coming days.
