Senegal: Faye warns of a possible collapse of the ruling party amid tensions with Sonko

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye warned that the ruling party could be heading down a path toward its collapse, while asserting that Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko would remain in office if he continued to "do his job well." These statements highlight growing tensions at the highest levels of government.

The president's remarks come amid signs of dissension between him and his prime minister, despite them being political allies. This public divergence fuels questions about the stability of the executive branch and the cohesion of the ruling party.

At the same time, Senegal is facing growing economic difficulties, linked in particular to the debt burden and the repercussions of the war against Iran on the global economy. These challenges are increasing the pressure on the government to provide swift and effective responses.

Discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding a new program have so far yielded little progress, adding to the economic uncertainty. This situation further complicates the task of the authorities in an already tense context.

Despite his criticisms, Bassirou Diomaye Faye clarified that Ousmane Sonko's continued tenure would depend on his ability to perform his duties satisfactorily, suggesting a desire to preserve some institutional stability.

These public statements, however, illustrate internal weaknesses within the Senegalese government, at a time when the country is facing major economic and political challenges.
