Presidential election in Benin: opposition leader Hounkpe concedes defeat to Wadagni

Opposition candidate Paul Hounkpe has conceded defeat in the presidential election in Benin, to Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, considered the overwhelming favorite in the election.

According to state television, Paul Hounkpe, the sole opposition candidate, conceded defeat following Sunday's vote, paving the way for Romuald Wadagni's victory. Wadagni is thus expected to take the helm of the country in a delicate political and security context.

The election campaign was marked by major concerns related to persistent poverty and the jihadist threat in certain regions. These issues dominated the debates, reflecting the challenges the future president will have to face.

Paul Hounkpe had notably criticized the country's economic performance, arguing that GDP growth was not sufficiently benefiting the population. He highlighted persistent inequalities despite positive macroeconomic indicators.

Romuald Wadagni's victory could be seen as a continuation of current economic policies, given his central role in managing the country's public finances in recent years.

This election marks a new stage for Benin, as the authorities will have to reconcile economic stability, security and the improvement of living conditions for the population.
