Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko met on Friday at the presidential residence in Valdai, in northwestern Russia, the Kremlin announced. The meeting comes amid ongoing tensions related to the war in Ukraine.
According to Russian authorities, the discussions between the two leaders are expected to focus on the conflict in Ukraine, in addition to several bilateral issues. Moscow and Minsk maintain close political, economic, and military cooperation, which has been strengthened since the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine.
During this meeting, Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko also discussed trade relations between their two countries, the implementation of joint economic projects, and the development of their strategic partnership.
Regional security issues were also on the agenda. Russia and Belarus cooperate closely in this area within the Union State, an integration structure that strengthens their political, economic, and military coordination.
This meeting comes as the conflict in Ukraine continues to weigh on security in Eastern Europe, and as Moscow and Minsk demonstrate close coordination in response to developments in the region. The Kremlin has not released any further details on the conclusions of the discussions.
