The death toll from the magnitude 7,8 earthquake that struck Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines on June 8 continues to rise. Authorities now report 61 fatalities, according to a statement from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) relayed by GMA News.
The earthquake also injured 1,221 people, and 33 are still missing. Approximately 88,000 residents were affected by the quake, which caused significant material damage in several areas of the Socsksargen region in Sarangani province.
According to the USGS (United States Geological Survey), the earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 55 kilometers, 26 km southwest of the city of Kablalan. The Philippines lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its frequent seismic and volcanic activity, making this type of disaster relatively common but often destructive.
Rescue efforts continue in the worst-affected areas, while local authorities fear the death toll could still rise.
