Beatings, medical negligence, deaths: the largest migrant detention center in the United States is targeted by an explosive lawsuit

Several human rights organizations have filed a lawsuit against US authorities regarding detention conditions at Camp East Montana, the largest migrant detention center in the United States. Located in El Paso, Texas, this vast tent complex was established as part of the mass deportation policy pursued by the president's administration. Donald Trump.

The lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, Human Rights Watch, and the Texas Civil Rights Project on behalf of four people currently detained at the facility. The organizations denounce serious human rights violations and demand urgent improvements to the detainees' living conditions.

According to the plaintiffs, guards allegedly engaged in beatings and acts of violence against some migrants. The complaint also cites insufficient access to medical care and detention conditions that could endanger the health and safety of those detained.

The associations point out that an inspection of the site identified 49 alleged violations of applicable standards. They also note that three people died in the nine months following the opening of the center, which currently houses more than 2,700 detainees.

The lawsuit targets U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which manages the camp, as well as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This is the first legal action brought against this facility, built on the Fort Bliss military base in the Texas desert.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to the allegations. U.S. authorities had previously asserted that the facility, estimated to cost $1,2 billion, complied with federal standards governing migrant detention. The plaintiff organizations now hope the court will mandate reforms to prevent further abuses and improve detention conditions at the center.
