NATO: Turkey calls for a redefinition of relations with Trump amid the risk of American disengagement

Turkey has called on NATO members to rethink their relations with the US president. Donald TrumpThis stance, taken ahead of the alliance's next summit scheduled for July in Ankara, reflects growing concerns about a possible US disengagement.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that the meeting would be an opportunity to strengthen dialogue with Washington and anticipate a possible reduction in American involvement in the alliance. He indicated that Donald Trump might attend the summit, particularly given his personal relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

For several years, Donald Trump has openly criticized NATO, notably accusing European countries of not contributing enough to their own defense. Last week, he even threatened to withdraw the United States from the alliance, exacerbating tensions between its members.

These statements come in an already tense geopolitical context, particularly due to the conflict in the Middle East and disagreements over maritime security management in the Strait of Hormuz. They revive fears of a weakening of transatlantic cooperation.

According to Hakan Fidan, the allies can no longer consider Donald Trump's criticisms as mere political statements. They must now prepare concretely for a scenario in which the United States reduces its role by strengthening its own military capabilities and coordination.

The July summit in Ankara could thus become a key moment for the future of NATO, as the alliance faces major internal and external challenges.
