New alert around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant: Moscow accuses Kyiv of a drone attack

Tensions surrounding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant escalated again on Saturday, with Russia claiming a Ukrainian drone had struck the site, while Ukraine categorically rejected the accusation. The incident concerns Europe's largest nuclear power plant, located in an area occupied by Russian forces since the early months of the war.

According to the Russian state-owned company Rosatom, a Ukrainian drone reached the perimeter of the nuclear power plant but did not damage any equipment essential to its operation and safety. Russian authorities indicated that no immediate threat to nuclear safety had been identified as a result of the incident.

Rosatom director Alexei Likhachev denounced what he described as yet another attack targeting a particularly sensitive infrastructure. Moscow regularly accuses Ukrainian forces of jeopardizing the security of the site, located in the Zaporizhzhia region.

For its part, the Ukrainian army rejected the Russian accusations and denied any involvement in an attack on the plant. Kyiv frequently accuses Moscow of using such allegations for propaganda purposes and maintains that it does not target nuclear facilities.

Since the beginning of the conflict, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been a central concern for the international community. Nuclear monitoring bodies have repeatedly warned of the risks associated with military operations conducted near the site.

This latest controversy illustrates once again the difficulty of independently verifying incidents occurring in combat zones. While Moscow and Kyiv continue to accuse each other of jeopardizing the security of the nuclear facility, concerns persist about the potential consequences of an escalation surrounding this strategic infrastructure.
