Nigerian security forces have launched a major operation to find armed men responsible for a mass kidnapping in Zamfara State, in the northwest of the country.
According to local officials, groups of bandits attacked several villages, including Kurfa Danya and Kurfan Magaji, in the Bukkuyum region. The assailants opened fire on homes and vehicles before entering the communities.
More than 150 people, mostly women and children, were reportedly abducted and taken to surrounding forested areas. The attack caused many residents to flee, leaving some villages almost deserted.
The Zamfara State Police confirmed the facts, while specifying that the exact number of victims was still being verified.
In response, a joint operation involving the police, the army and other security services was deployed to track down the attackers and attempt to free the hostages.
This attack is among the most significant to have occurred recently in this region, which is regularly affected by violence linked to armed groups, kidnappings and acts of banditry.
Northwest Nigeria continues to face persistent insecurity, with mass kidnappings becoming a frequent method for obtaining ransoms and putting pressure on the authorities.
