New York police said a device thrown during protests outside Mayor Zohran Mamdani's official residence this weekend was an explosive device capable of causing serious injury or death.
The incident occurred Saturday in front of Gracie Mansion, the mayor's residence in Manhattan. According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, an incendiary device consisting of a jar filled with nuts, bolts, and screws, wrapped in black tape and fitted with a fuse, was lit and then thrown by a counter-protester. The device ultimately extinguished itself before exploding.
Police stated that two devices were launched during the demonstrations between two rival groups. The second device is still being analyzed by investigators. Two people have been taken into custody as part of the investigation.
Tensions erupted during a rally organized by far-right activist Jake Lang outside the mayor's residence. The demonstration denounced what the organizer called an "Islamic takeover" of New York City and protested, among other things, against public Muslim prayers.
According to authorities, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his wife were likely not at the residence at the time of the incident. In a statement released Sunday, the mayor condemned the demonstration and the ensuing violence.
"Violence during a demonstration is unacceptable," he said. "Attempting to use an explosive device to injure people is not only criminal, but also deeply contrary to our values."
The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the incident and the responsibilities of those involved.
