Shipwreck in the Andaman Sea: A Rohingya survivor describes the horror, nearly 250 missing

A Rohingya survivor has given a harrowing account after an overcrowded boat capsized in the Andaman Sea, leaving approximately 250 people missing. The tragedy occurred in early April during a clandestine crossing to Malaysia.

The boat had departed from Teknaf, in southern Bangladesh, carrying Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals. According to United Nations agencies specializing in migration and refugees, the boat capsized after several days at sea due to rough weather conditions, strong winds, and extreme overloading.

According to survivors, nearly 300 people were crammed onto the ship, including women and children. The testimony of Rafiqul Islam, one of the survivors, describes a harrowing four-day, four-night crossing marked by fear, lack of space, and increasingly dangerous conditions.

To avoid maritime patrols, the smugglers allegedly forced passengers to hide in cramped compartments intended for storing fish and nets. This extreme overcrowding reportedly worsened the situation as the sea became rougher.

Bangladesh hosts approximately 1,2 million Rohingya refugees, most of whom fled violence in Myanmar in 2017. Despite the dangers, many refugees continue to attempt these perilous journeys in the hope of finding safety and better living conditions abroad.

This latest tragedy highlights the ongoing vulnerability of the Rohingya, who are often forced to risk their lives at sea. It also underscores the extent of human trafficking networks that exploit their plight in a region where sustainable solutions remain limited.
