Far from the fields of technology, artificial intelligence and space exploration, the American entrepreneur Elon Musk announced plans to launch a new project aimed at reinventing urban transportation. Rather than looking to major Western cities, it has chosen the United Arab Emirates, specifically Dubai, to begin this project, as reported by the website "Interesting Engineering."
The Boring company, known for its ambitious transport tunnel projects, is set to build a 17-kilometer underground network to accommodate autonomous vehicles across Dubai. The city, known for its rapid urban development, faces challenges related to space and the environment.
As the city grows, so does the demand for more efficient transportation solutions, making Musk's project particularly relevant. Underground tunnels could reduce congestion above ground and limit the ecological impact of additional infrastructure.
At the World Government Summit in Dubai, Musk announced his collaboration with the UAE's Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence Affairs, Omar Al Olama, saying: "People will be impressed once they get a chance to try this system."
The system has been named the Dubai Loop, and is designed to carry up to 20 passengers per hour. It will feature more than 000 stations to connect major transport hubs and points of interest across the city, ensuring a comprehensive public transport experience for residents and visitors alike.
One of the major benefits of underground transportation is its ability to escape the extreme temperatures typical of the region. Musk said the underground environment will remain cooler, even during high temperatures, making for a more pleasant travel experience.
Safety is a crucial element in the design of “Boring.” In a similar project in Las Vegas, the company assured that the tunnels were designed to allow for safe evacuation in the event of an emergency. In addition, it specified that there were no hazards inside the tunnels, which are equipped with a dual ventilation system designed to manage smoke in the event of a fire. These safety measures are intended to reassure the public that the underground network is safe.
Although the Dubai Loop project is still in development, no specific timeline has been announced for when it will begin construction. Such a complex system could take several years to build, but if successful, it could provide a solution to the challenges of urban expansion in cities like Dubai.
With the public unveiling of this project, all eyes are on Musk and the Boring Company to see if they can meet the needs of growing cities while striking the right balance between innovation and implementation.
