Russia has stated its readiness to resume dialogue with European countries, while warning that it will not accept any form of ultimatum. This declaration comes amid several signs suggesting a possible resumption of contacts between the European Union and Moscow after more than four years of relations severely strained by the war in Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that "common sense" dictated the resumption of talks between Russia and European capitals due to the numerous outstanding international issues. He argued that current relations could not remain frozen indefinitely given the security, economic, and diplomatic stakes involved for both sides.
However, Moscow believes that European leaders are approaching the issue from the wrong angle. Dmitry Peskov stated that several European countries seemed to believe they could negotiate with Russia from a position of strength, assuming a weakening of Moscow. The Kremlin considers this approach doomed to failure.
The Russian official made particularly harsh remarks about European leaders, asserting that this perception stemmed either from a misunderstanding of the situation or from a flawed analysis of the balance of power. According to him, such positions would prevent any concrete results from being achieved in potential negotiations.
For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin has already indicated his willingness to engage in dialogue with European governments. Moscow, however, believes that the initiative for rapprochement must come from Europe, arguing that Western countries have severed the main channels of diplomatic communication since the beginning of the conflict.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the European Union has adopted twenty rounds of sanctions targeting the Russian economy, its political leaders, and several strategic sectors. These measures have significantly damaged relations between Moscow and Brussels, reducing diplomatic exchanges to their lowest level in decades.
These statements also come in a context marked by a major Ukrainian drone attack against Moscow, acknowledged by the Kremlin. As fighting continues on the ground, the question of resuming dialogue between Russia and Europe remains more central than ever to diplomatic discussions.
