Russia was targeted by a major Ukrainian drone attack overnight Saturday to Sunday, killing at least four people, according to Russian authorities. Moscow is believed to have suffered its largest drone attack in over a year amid the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kyiv.
The strikes hit several Russian regions, causing damage to residential buildings and sowing panic among residents. Images broadcast by Russian media show shattered windows and damaged buildings in the Krasnogorsk region, near Moscow.
Russian authorities reported that several drones were intercepted by air defense systems, but some managed to reach their targets. The death toll could still rise, as several people were also injured in the attacks.
This offensive comes as the war between Russia and Ukraine sees an intensification of long-range strikes. For several months, Kyiv has been increasing its drone operations targeting Russian territory, particularly energy, military, and industrial infrastructure.
Ukrainian authorities do not usually officially claim responsibility for these types of attacks, but they regularly present them as a response to daily Russian bombings of Ukrainian cities.
The attack on Moscow also underlines the growing vulnerability of the Russian capital to long-range drones despite the strengthening of air defense systems around the city.
As fighting continues on the front, this new wave of strikes risks further fueling tensions between the two countries and reinforcing concerns about an escalation of the conflict beyond traditional combat zones.
