Moscow and Beijing denounce Trump's "Golden Dome" and accuse Washington of threatening the global nuclear balance

Russia and China on Wednesday strongly criticized the US "Golden Dome" missile defense project, championed by the US president. Donald Trump, believing that it represents a direct threat to global strategic stability.

This condemnation was issued in a joint statement published in Beijing after a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart. Xi JinpingPutin's official visit to the Chinese capital was marked by a solemn ceremony at the Great Hall of the People, with an honor guard and cannon salutes.

The "Golden Dome" project envisions the development of a vast missile defense system combining ground-based and space-based capabilities. According to information released by Washington, it would include interceptor missiles, advanced satellite networks, detection and command systems, and orbital capabilities designed to track and potentially neutralize enemy missiles before or during their trajectory.

In their joint statement, Moscow and Beijing assert that this system aims to create an "unlimited, global, and multi-spheric" missile defense capable of intercepting all types of missiles, including those from major nuclear powers. The two countries maintain that this strategy undermines the fundamental principle of balance between offensive and defensive capabilities, considered essential to nuclear deterrence.

Russia and China have also accused the United States of adopting an "irresponsible" policy by allowing the New START nuclear treaty to expire without finding a successor. Signed in 2010 between Washington and Moscow, this treaty was the last major bilateral agreement limiting the strategic nuclear arsenals of the two powers.

Beijing continues to refuse any participation in potential trilateral negotiations on nuclear arms control with the United States and Russia. Moscow has stated its support for this Chinese position. However, some US officials believe that a future nuclear agreement cannot ignore the rapid development of China's arsenal.

This new demonstration of unity between Russia and China comes amid rising tensions between major powers, marked by the accelerated modernization of military systems, the militarization of space and the gradual erosion of international arms control agreements.
