Merz asserts that Europe wants to preserve a strong NATO despite tensions related to Iran.

Friedrich Merz said on Saturday that European countries wanted to maintain a strong alliance within NATO despite the differences that have emerged with the United States over the war against Iran.

During a visit to Stockholm, the German leader affirmed that Europe shared with Washington the goal of ending the conflict, while acknowledging that the management of the war by Donald Trump had caused tensions with several European governments.

Merz stressed the importance of preserving the functioning of NATO and maintaining transatlantic cooperation in an international context deemed particularly unstable.

The German chancellor also criticized the Slovak prime minister's decision to participate in the Russian Victory Day ceremonies in Moscow, believing that such a trip sent the wrong signal while the war in Ukraine continues.

Relations between the United States and some European allies have become strained in recent weeks after several European countries refused to fully support the American strategy in the conflict with Iran.
