Off the coast of Italy, two merchant ships rescued 32 migrants after a boat that had departed from Libya capsized, while 71 other people are missing, according to humanitarian organizations.
Rescuers also recovered two bodies, which were transferred with the survivors to the island of Lampedusa by the Italian coast guard.
According to survivor testimonies, the boat was carrying a much larger number of migrants, the majority of whom remain missing after the tragedy that occurred during Easter weekend.
The rescue operations were carried out with the support of NGOs such as Sea-Watch and Mediterranea Saving Humans, which regularly warn about the dangers of crossings in the central Mediterranean.
This migratory route, one of the most dangerous in the world, continues to claim many victims, as the boats are often overloaded and unsuitable for navigating the high seas.
This latest tragedy illustrates once again the gravity of the migration crisis in the Mediterranean, where thousands of people attempt to reach Europe each year at the risk of their lives.
Humanitarian organizations are calling for increased rescue capacity and the implementation of sustainable solutions to prevent further tragedies.
