Malaysia: Fire ravages coastal village, leaving more than 9,000 people homeless

A devastating fire destroyed approximately 1,000 homes in the Malaysian state of Sabah, displacing thousands of people in a coastal village on the island of Borneo. The blaze, which broke out Sunday night, struck an already vulnerable community, but authorities reported no casualties.

According to emergency services, the fire broke out around 1:32 a.m. in the Sandakan district. Firefighters, who were quickly mobilized, faced particularly difficult conditions that contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.

District fire chief Jimmy Lagung stated that strong wind gusts, combined with the high density of housing, accelerated the fire's spread. The situation was exacerbated by low tide, which limited access to open water sources for firefighting.

The disaster struck a village built on stilts, typical of certain coastal areas of Sabah. These precarious dwellings often house some of the poorest populations in the country, including indigenous communities and stateless people, making their situation even more critical in the face of this type of disaster.

According to local police, more than 9,000 residents have been affected by the fire, although no deaths have been reported so far. However, the extent of the material damage suggests a major humanitarian crisis for the affected families.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has assured that the federal government is working in coordination with the Sabah authorities to provide emergency assistance. Measures are underway to provide temporary accommodation and meet the basic needs of displaced people.
