Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro officially opened the race for the October presidential election on Sunday, each mobilizing their supporters in symbolic rallies.

At 80, Lula chose São Bernardo do Campo, in the state of São Paulo, to launch his campaign. This choice is not insignificant: it was in this working-class city that the steelworker built his national reputation in the 1970s, speaking to massive crowds. The left-wing president clearly intends to draw on this personal history to mobilize his electorate.

Meanwhile, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro rallied his supporters on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro. The son of former president Jair Bolsonaro represents the right wing in this election and seeks to capitalize on his family's political legacy to establish himself as the main opponent of the incumbent president.

The Brazilian presidential election is scheduled for October.
