Ukraine has asked its European Union partners to mobilize €6,6 billion from the European Peace Facility to support its military effort against Russia. Kyiv believes it has a six- to nine-month "window of opportunity" on the battlefield and is seeking to accelerate deliveries of equipment and support.
According to a letter from Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, seen by Reuters, Ukraine's total defense needs for the year are estimated at around €136 billion. Of this amount, approximately €53 billion would be covered by the national budget, leaving a significant funding gap.
The Ukrainian official stated that the European Union is expected to provide approximately €28,3 billion in defense aid in 2026 as part of a larger €90 billion loan. Despite these commitments, Kyiv maintains that "substantial" needs remain unmet.
In this context, Ukraine believes that funds from the European Peace Facility could represent one of Europe's most significant contributions this year. However, it insists on the need to direct these resources towards uses that have an immediate and direct military impact on the ground.
As the war continues, Kyiv is increasing its calls to its Western allies to maintain and accelerate financial and military support, believing that the coming months could be decisive in the evolution of the conflict.
