Ukraine claimed responsibility on Friday for a major drone operation against several targets in Russia, notably saying it had struck an oil refinery in the city of Ryazan, located about 200 kilometers southeast of Moscow.
According to Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine's drone forces, the attack targeted strategic infrastructure overnight. Images circulating on social media and relayed by the media show large flames and a thick plume of smoke rising near the Ryazan refinery.
The Ukrainian military official stated that his forces had conducted strikes against 23 targets and military installations located both on Russian territory and in Ukrainian areas occupied by Russia. Kyiv has been pursuing a strategy for several months aimed at striking Russian energy and logistical infrastructure far from the front lines.
The Ryazan refinery is a vital energy site for Russia. Russian authorities did not immediately release details of the damage or specify whether production had been affected by the attack. No official casualty figures were immediately available.
Since the start of the conflict, Ukrainian drone attacks deep into Russian territory have increased, targeting refineries, fuel depots, military bases, and industrial infrastructure. Moscow regularly accuses Kyiv of seeking to destabilize the Russian economy and sow fear far from the fighting.
These strikes come as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate on multiple fronts. Both sides are increasing their long-range attacks, while energy infrastructure has become a major strategic target in the conflict.
