Ukraine takes a historic step towards the European Union despite the war

Ukraine officially launched the first phase of its accession negotiations with the European Union on Monday, a major step forward for Kyiv as the country continues its resistance against the Russian invasion. This stage marks the beginning of a complex process aimed at bringing Ukraine closer to European institutions and strengthening its ties with the West.

The opening ceremony of the negotiations took place in Luxembourg, where Ukrainian and European officials began discussions on an initial set of political issues. These talks aim to prepare for the gradual alignment of Ukrainian legislation with European Union standards and rules.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka described the moment as a "true Rubicon," emphasizing its historical significance for the country. He stated that joining the European Union is a widely shared aspiration among Ukrainian society.

Since the beginning of the war with Russia, the president Volodymyr Zelensky has made European integration one of the pillars of its foreign policy. Kyiv considers its membership of the Union as a guarantee of stability, economic prosperity and long-term security, both for Ukraine and for the whole of the European continent.

European diplomats, however, emphasize that the path to full accession will be long and demanding. Ukraine will have to implement numerous reforms in key areas such as justice, governance, the economy, and the rule of law in order to meet the criteria imposed on future members of the Union.

The European Union has also stressed the need for Kyiv to continue its transformation efforts despite the difficulties linked to the conflict. European officials believe these reforms are essential to ensure successful integration within the bloc.

Although the outcome of the process remains uncertain and negotiations could extend over several years, this official opening constitutes a significant diplomatic victory for Ukraine. It symbolizes the country's desire to forge closer ties with Europe in a lasting way while confronting the consequences of the war with Russia.
