Ukraine announces the repatriation of 160 soldiers detained in Russia

Ukraine announced on Friday the return of 160 soldiers who had been held in Russia since the start of the war, as part of a new prisoner exchange between the two countries.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated on Telegram that the repatriated soldiers had all been held captive since 2022, the year the large-scale Russian invasion began.

The head of state did not specify the terms of this exchange nor indicate how many Russian prisoners had been handed over to Moscow in return.

Prisoner exchanges are one of the few areas of cooperation maintained between Kyiv and Moscow despite the ongoing fighting. They are generally negotiated with the mediation of third countries or international organizations.

Ukrainian authorities have indicated that the released soldiers will now receive medical examinations, psychological support and a period of rehabilitation after several years of captivity.
