The European Union welcomed the two-week ceasefire agreed between the United States and Iran, seeing it as an essential de-escalation after several weeks of military tensions.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, considered this agreement an important step, while stressing the need to continue negotiations to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East.
The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, called on all parties to respect the terms of the agreement in order to consolidate this fragile lull.
For her part, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, described the ceasefire as "a step back from the precipice" after an escalation marked by strikes and increasing threats.
According to her, this pause in hostilities offers an opportunity to revive maritime navigation, reduce security risks and reopen diplomatic space with a view to a broader agreement.
The European Union is now insisting on the need to transform this temporary truce into a lasting political solution, in a region where tensions remain extremely high.
