Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has stated that a meeting with his American counterpart Donald Trump could take place, provided that a "major agreement" between the two countries is first finalized.
In an interview with the Russian broadcaster RT, Lukashenko stated that Minsk was willing to negotiate, while emphasizing the need for a balanced agreement. "We are ready to reach an agreement, but it must be prepared in a way that reflects the interests of both the United States and Belarus," he said.
This statement suggests a diplomatic opening between the two countries, in a context of historically strained relations, marked by political disagreements and Western sanctions against Belarus.
The Belarusian leader is thus conditioning any meeting at the highest level on concrete progress on the diplomatic front, suggesting that a dialogue could be relaunched if the foundations for a compromise are established.
This perspective comes at a time of international recomposition, where several actors are seeking to redefine their bilateral relations in the face of ongoing geopolitical crises.
Although no date was mentioned, Lukashenko's remarks demonstrate a clear willingness to engage, while setting strict conditions for a possible meeting with the American president.
