India has expressed its "deep concern" over reports of numerous civilian casualties in Lebanon, following an intensification of Israeli strikes in the country.
In a statement, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs stressed the need to protect civilian populations and to respect international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity of States.
These statements come after a series of particularly deadly bombings carried out by Israel, which are reported to have caused the deaths of more than 300 people.
The offensive is part of a broader conflict involving Iran's ally Hezbollah, while the war between Tehran and a US- and Israeli-led coalition continues to destabilize the region.
Despite its close ties with Israel, notably strengthened by relations between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Israeli authorities, New Delhi is adopting a cautious position here, calling for respect for humanitarian principles.
These strikes in Lebanon come amid a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran, which has so far failed to ease tensions on the indirect fronts of the conflict.
While negotiations are expected in Pakistan to try to defuse the crisis, the humanitarian situation in Lebanon continues to cause growing concern internationally.
