The International Committee of the Red Cross expressed its deep concern on Monday over the increasing number of attacks targeting medical workers in Lebanon, describing the situation as "gravely worrying" after several deadly incidents.
According to the official Lebanese news agency, an airstrike on Monday, attributed to Israel, hit a Red Cross center in the Tyre region, killing one person and damaging emergency vehicles. The ICRC confirmed that its facilities had been affected, without specifying the victim's identity or formally assigning responsibility.
The Israeli military stated that it had conducted a targeted strike against a "Hezbollah terrorist" in the same area and said it was investigating reports that a Red Cross center had been damaged. It did not provide further details about the individual targeted.
The day before, the Lebanese Red Cross had already announced the death of one of its volunteers, Hassan Badawi, from injuries sustained in a drone strike in the Bint Jbeil district, also in the south of the country. These events illustrate the growing vulnerability of humanitarian personnel in a context of ongoing violence.
The ICRC reiterates that medical and humanitarian workers must be protected in all circumstances, in accordance with international humanitarian law. Any attack against these workers is likely to seriously compromise access to healthcare for civilian populations.
In a climate of heightened regional tensions, these incidents reinforce concerns about the safety of humanitarian operations in Lebanon, already weakened by the consequences of the ongoing conflict.
