The Kurds of Syria warn their Iranian counterparts against an alliance with Washington

Kurds in northeastern Syria have warned Iranian Kurds against any alliance with the United States to fight the Iranian government, arguing that such a partnership could backfire. These warnings come as tensions escalate in the region following US and Israeli airstrikes against Iran.

According to several reports by Reuters, Iranian Kurdish militias based in northern Iraq recently discussed with US officials the possibility of attacking Iranian security forces in the west of the country. These discussions reportedly took place in the context of the military offensive led by Washington and Tel Aviv against Tehran.

But in the Kurdish areas of northeastern Syria, some residents and observers warn against the risks of such cooperation. They say their own experience of allying with the United States in the Syrian war left a bitter taste and demonstrated the limitations of this type of partnership.

“I hope the Kurds in Iran don’t ally themselves with America, because they would be abandoning it,” said Saad Ali, a 45-year-old resident of Qamishli. He believes the Kurds could be sacrificed if Washington’s geopolitical interests shift.

"Tomorrow, if an agreement is reached between them and the Iranians, they will eliminate you. Do not make our mistakes," he added, mentioning the fear of being abandoned after having served as an ally on the ground.

These warnings reflect the tensions and uncertainties surrounding regional alliances in the context of the ongoing war in the Middle East. While the United States seeks to weaken Iran, the various Kurdish forces in the region are weighing the risks and benefits of more direct involvement in the conflict.
