The President's Administration Donald Trump decided to prevent electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar from marketing new models in the US market from the 2027 model year onwards, thus strengthening restrictions on automotive technologies linked to China.
Polestar, the Swedish automaker majority-owned by the Chinese group Geely Holding, announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce would not grant it permission to sell new vehicles subject to regulations on "connected vehicles." This decision caused its stock to fall by more than 6% on the Nasdaq.
US regulations target embedded technologies that enable vehicle connectivity, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular communications, and certain satellite links. Washington believes these systems could allow the collection of sensitive data about American drivers, posing a national security risk.
This rule was adopted in January 2025 under the presidency of Joe Biden before being maintained and implemented by the Trump administration. It is part of a broader strategy aimed at limiting the influence of Chinese technologies in sectors deemed strategic.
Despite this ban, Polestar indicated that it would continue to sell the already authorized Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 models in the United States, while maintaining its maintenance and service network for existing customers.
For several years, the United States has been implementing numerous measures to curb the influx of Chinese electric vehicles into its market. In addition to regulations on connected vehicles, imports of electric cars manufactured in China are already subject to high tariffs, and several US lawmakers are seeking to further tighten restrictions.
For Polestar, the US market represented approximately 6% of its global sales in the first quarter. The company will now have to adapt its sales strategy in the face of an increasingly restrictive regulatory environment.
