The United States intercepts a sanctioned supertanker in the Indian Ocean, a new escalation of tensions with Iran

The US armed forces announced they had intercepted the oil tanker Davina, a sanctioned vessel without a recognized national flag, during an operation in the Indian Ocean. This intervention is part of Washington's efforts to strengthen control over maritime trade linked to Iran.

According to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, the operation took place overnight from Thursday to Friday. U.S. authorities released images showing military personnel boarding the vessel, which was described as part of maritime networks supporting Iranian oil trade.

The interception comes as tensions remain extremely high in the region. The United States has intensified its pressure measures against Iranian oil exports, while Tehran is accused of disrupting navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for global hydrocarbon trade.

In a statement released on social media, the US command affirmed that it would continue its maritime surveillance operations worldwide to dismantle illicit networks and intercept vessels providing material support to Iran. Several oil tankers and merchant ships have already been intercepted in the Indian Ocean in recent months.

The Davina, also known as the Lenore, is a supertanker capable of carrying up to two million barrels of crude oil. The vessel was placed under US sanctions in 2024 for its alleged involvement in the Iranian oil trade.

Maritime tracking data indicated the vessel was off the coast of Sri Lanka at the time of its interception. Available information also suggests it was almost entirely laden with oil. US authorities have not specified what will happen to the cargo or crew following the operation.

This latest seizure underlines the intensification of the economic and maritime confrontation between Washington and Tehran, as regional tensions continue to fuel uncertainty over strategic energy routes in the Middle East and the Indian Ocean.
