The United States strikes Iran after attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz

The US military announced Tuesday that it had launched a series of strikes against Iran in response to attacks attributed to Tehran on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. These are the first known US military operations against Iran since late last month, marking a further escalation of tensions between the two countries.

In a statement, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) indicated that its forces had launched "a series of powerful strikes" aimed at inflicting heavy losses on Iran by targeting its capabilities related to attacks against commercial shipping.

According to a US military spokesperson, the strikes were decided upon in response to what Washington describes as Iranian attacks against merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. US authorities believe these actions constituted a clear violation of the existing ceasefire and represented a direct threat to the safety of international maritime traffic.

US authorities did not specify which facilities or targets were involved in the operation. Meanwhile, Iranian media reported that six projectiles struck the port area of Taheroui, located in Sirik, southern Iran.

This new military intervention comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. The two countries had already exchanged several days of airstrikes and counter-strikes at the end of last month, before a fragile ceasefire was established. Recent incidents at sea, particularly attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, have raised fears of a resumption of hostilities and a further deterioration of security in this region, which is strategic for global energy trade.
