The United States plans to significantly reduce its fleet of fighter jets and warships made available to NATO operations in Europe, according to reports. New York Times and relayed by European officials.
This decision, if confirmed, could limit certain operational capabilities of the Atlantic Alliance, particularly in the areas of long-range strikes and surveillance missions. The officials quoted believe this development would represent a significant adjustment to the American military presence on the European continent.
According to available information, the American plan would involve reducing the number of F-16 and F-15E fighter jets from approximately 150 to around 100. Maritime reconnaissance aircraft would also be affected, with a reduction from 26 to 15 units.
The plan would also include the withdrawal of eight aerial refueling aircraft previously deployed to European operations. Furthermore, a missile submarine and an aircraft carrier would be redeployed outside the European area, accompanied by several warships and dozens of fighter jets associated with carrier strike groups.
The report also mentions the possible reassignment of one of the two bomber groups currently engaged in the defense of Europe. Such a decision would reflect a shift in American military priorities toward other regions of the world.
In response to this information, NATO reiterated that the balance of responsibilities is gradually shifting between the United States, Europe, and Canada. Alliance spokesperson Allison Hart emphasized that increasing investments by European allies in their defense capabilities could alter the distribution of military resources within the organization.
This potential development comes amid persistent tensions related to the war in Ukraine and recurring debates on security burden-sharing within NATO.
