The United States announced that a high-level meeting on Iran would be held Tuesday in Doha, Qatar, with the participation of the president's top envoys. Donald TrumpSteve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. This meeting comes amid high regional tensions, despite a still fragile ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran.
According to a message posted Monday by Donald Trump on social media, Iran itself requested the meeting, though the US president did not specify the details. The meeting is to take place in the Qatari capital, while parallel technical discussions are also planned alongside the political talks.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would be participating in the discussions. She indicated that these meetings are a continuation of the negotiations surrounding a memorandum of understanding between the two countries. Technical teams will also be mobilized to support the substantive discussions.
These talks are taking place in a particularly tense climate, marked by recent exchanges of airstrikes. Washington and Tehran accuse each other of violating an interim ceasefire, which has been undermined by several incidents, including an attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz last week.
The United States and Iran signed a 14-point framework agreement on June 17 aimed at ending months of conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas flows. Despite this commitment, tensions on the ground continued to escalate.
In this context, Karoline Leavitt stated on Fox News that the United States was respecting the ceasefire, while warning that any further attacks would be met with retaliation. She nevertheless emphasized the American administration's commitment to maintaining the ongoing diplomatic process and avoiding further military escalation in the region.
