US authorities have launched an investigation after the discovery of a huge inscription representing the number "8647" on a lawn of the National Mall in Washington, near the World War II memorial.
The inscription was spotted Thursday by a Reuters photographer from the top of the Washington Monument. Shortly after the discovery, National Park Police officers and National Guard members arrived at the scene to secure the area and examine the site.
The U.S. Department of the Interior called the incident "senseless vandalism" and said it was taking the matter very seriously.
The number "8647" has become a slogan used in recent months by some opponents of the American president. Donald TrumpThe number "47" refers to the fact that Trump is the 47th president of the United States, while the term "86," from American restaurant slang, generally means "to get rid of" or "to expel."
This interpretation is, however, debated. Some supporters of the president, as well as officials from the US Department of Justice, believe that the slogan could be perceived as an implicit call for violence against the head of state, while its users claim that it is simply a political message rejecting his administration.
Authorities have not yet announced any arrests and are continuing their investigations to determine the origin of this marking and any potential responsibilities.
