The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a worsening Ebola epidemic. Health authorities announced on Friday that the number of confirmed cases had reached 1,502, while the death toll has now risen to 473.

According to data published by the government, infections continue to be concentrated in the east of the country, where several provinces remain heavily affected by the spread of the virus.

The cases recorded mainly concern the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu, regions that have been facing armed conflict and persistent insecurity for several years, complicating the interventions of medical teams.

The authorities are continuing their efforts to contain the epidemic, including through screening, treatment of the sick and health surveillance measures in the affected areas.

This new Ebola outbreak is one of the largest recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo in recent years. Health authorities remain mobilized to limit the spread of the virus and reduce the number of victims.
