Somaliland has stated that no negotiations are underway with Israel regarding the establishment of a military base on its territory, while confirming that local forces are receiving training provided by Israeli instructors.
The territorial defense minister, Mohamed Yusuf Ali, clarified that these activities fall within a framework of security cooperation, particularly for the training of police and certain military units. He added that discussions with Israel focus primarily on investments in civilian sectors such as agriculture.
This cooperation comes after a visit by a high-level delegation from Somaliland to Israel, marking a new stage in relations between the two entities, with Israel having officially recognized Somaliland in December. The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, led this diplomatic mission.
Media outlets had reported the potential existence of an Israeli intelligence base in the region and discussions regarding a military installation. These reports were rejected by Somaliland authorities, who insist that no such agreement exists.
Somaliland, a region separated from Somalia since 1991 and enjoying de facto autonomy, has been seeking for several years to strengthen its international recognition and attract foreign investment. Somalia continues to contest any diplomatic recognition of the territory.
