Rwanda claims to have secured the necessary funding to maintain its troops in Mozambique.

The Rwandan government said on Tuesday that Mozambique had secured the necessary funding to allow the Rwandan army to continue its mission in Cabo Delgado province, a strategic region rich in natural gas and facing a jihadist insurgency for several years.

Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Jean Patrick Nduhungirehe indicated that Kigali would now deal directly with Mozambican authorities regarding the financing of the military deployment.

Since 2021, Rwanda has maintained troops in northern Mozambique at Maputo's request to help secure areas affected by armed groups linked to the Islamic State. This intervention has contributed to the recapture of several strategic locations occupied by the insurgents.

Until now, part of this mission was funded by the European Union. But according to Kigali, Brussels has become increasingly reluctant to continue this financial support.

In a message posted on the X network, Olivier Nduhungirehe stated that Mozambique had now secured the necessary resources to continue funding Rwandan security forces in Cabo Delgado. However, he provided no details on the amount of funding or its source.

Rwanda warned in March that it might withdraw its troops if sufficient funding was not guaranteed. This warning came after reports that the European Union was not considering renewing its financial support for the mission.

The stability of Cabo Delgado is considered essential for international energy projects in the region, particularly those linked to the French group TotalEnergies, which has significant gas investments in northern Mozambique.
