The United Kingdom has announced the deployment of the destroyer HMS Dragon to the Middle East as part of preparations for a possible multinational mission to secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, at the heart of tensions related to the war between the United States and Iran.
The HMS Dragon, an air defense vessel, had already been deployed to the eastern Mediterranean in March to help protect Cyprus after the start of the conflict. London has now decided to reposition the ship closer to the Gulf.
According to the British Ministry of Defence, this deployment is part of planning carried out jointly with France to prepare a future international coalition tasked with restoring the security of maritime traffic in this strategic area.
Paris has also reinforced its military presence in the region by sending its naval task force to the southern Red Sea. The two countries are working on a plan to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels once the situation has stabilized.
The project would require coordination with Iran, while a dozen countries have already expressed interest in participating in this security mission.
This initiative comes as Washington and Tehran appear to be slowly moving towards a possible de-escalation after ten weeks of war, even though clashes and tensions remain high in the Gulf.
