Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called for a strengthening of national unity and a consolidation of state authority, amid high political and security tensions in Lebanon.
In a message published on the anniversary of the assassination of former minister Tony Frangieh and members of his family, the head of state stated that the country is at a pivotal moment in its history. According to him, Lebanon must choose between two paths: a state where the monopoly on weapons belongs exclusively to official institutions, or a country permanently influenced by the logic of militias.
He stressed that community and regional divisions are not a solution to the current crises, calling for a move beyond traditional political divides. The president also emphasized the need to build unity based on justice, equality among citizens, and political openness.
This statement comes at a time when the debate on the disarmament of non-state armed groups remains particularly sensitive, especially concerning Hezbollah, which rejects any questioning of its arsenal. The government, for its part, continues to defend the principle of exclusive state control of arms, in an already highly unstable regional context.
